Is Sangiovese only Grown in Italy?
The Answer is NO it’s grown in many regions, one of those regions happens to be Paso Robles.
The 2008 growing season for Paso Robles proved to be a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. It began with an extremely dry winter – we had less than seven inches of rain. A very warm spring followed, pushing budbreak in early March. We were thrilled at that point, as early budbreak leads to extended hangtime, which produces high-quality concentrated fruit. We were then hit with frost in early April that had us scrambling for a few nights. Fortunately, we escaped excessive damage, and the consistently warm summer season allowed the clusters to ripen leisurely to full maturity. 97% Sangiovese 3%Merlot.
The grapes were hand-picked at night. The fruit was cluster-sorted, destemmed and berry-sorted. The wine was racked to a mixture of small, mostly French oak barrels for malo-lactic fermentation and aging. About one quarter of the barrels chosen to age this lot were new, adding structure and texture to the finished wine.
Tasting Notes
Aromas include malt chocolate, hot cocoa mix, a dried woody character and tart cran-cherry. Vanilla, caramel and nutmeg baking spices round out the velvety flavor profile with big texture and good tannin structure.
