Cuvee du Vatican Cotes Du Rhone Villages 89 Points!!
Solid, with a nice gutsy feel to the dark currant and fig fruit, liberally laced with roasted espresso notes. Hefty, but still racy enough for balance. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 5,000 cases made. –JM Wine Spectator
Jean-Marc Diffonty is the 4th generation at the domain and has been responsible, since his father Felician Diffonty left the reigns in 1993. He was the mayor of Chateauneuf du Pape 1965-1995 and it was he who in 1958 was named the plave Cuvee du Vatican and was blessed by the Pope! Cuvee Du Vatican has had a recent renovation to the ageing cellar in 2003 and the Vinification cellar in 2007. The domain covers 21ha of Chateauneuf du Pape, 14ha of Cotes du Rhone Village. The Wines are refined over a 12 month period in vats. The management of the estates is divided into separate vineyard lots which allow the wines to express with subtlety the varying characters of the soils. All grapes are hand harvested at the moment of optimal ripeness. Cuvee Du Vaticans low yield ratio and rigorous grape selection on the vine, produce some beautiful wines of enormous value!! This bottle is a must have, which is approachable now, but has the potential to be laid down for some time.
