2010 Leon Vatan Sancerre

What makes Sancerre So Special?

Known as the spiritual home of Sauvignon Blanc, Sancerre is part of the central vineyards of the Loire Valley. So named not because they are in the center of the Loire but rather because they are nearly in the center of France. Together with neighboring Pouilly-Fume, the region makes up the eastern most extension of the Loire Valley.

The area is more than 300 miles from the Atlantic Coast and is actually closer to the Champagne wine region than it is to the Middle Loire city of Tours and the Vouvray/Chinon A.O.C.’s. The distance from the Atlantic gives this region more of a continental climate than typical of the rest of the Loire with short, hot summers and long cold winters that may extend the threat of frost damage into early spring.

The distinctively smoky character of Sauvignon Blanc from this area is an intrinsic part of the Sancerre palate and is referred to locally as pierre a fusil. This aroma is the reason that Sauvignon in the eastern Loire has taken the pseudonym Blanc Fume – which explains the Fume of Pouilly-Fume, just across the Loire. It is complemented by the appellation’s other key mineral, calcium, which is present in the form of limestone in the soils and as a ‘chalky’ flavor in the white wines.

Loire Valley, France

Brilliant pale straw, almost clear, color followed by classic aromas of white grapefruit, nectarine, fresh cut grass, white flowers and chalky minerals.  Outstanding freshness and zesty acids quench the palate covering it in citrusy, mineral laden flavors.  Clean and mouth filling while finishing with lengthy flavors of fresh grapefruit, hints of kiwi and chalky minerals.  Ideal as an aperitif as well as perfect pair with shellfish, fish and even poultry dishes.
