Wine Tour of Champagne & Burgundy

posted in: Events, News 0

Sherlocks Wine Merchant and The Cooks Warehouse Decatur is pleased to announce our 2nd Annual Wine Education Tour.  This year we will
be traveling to the French regions of Champagne & Burgundy, in June.  As with our
trip last year to Bordeaux, we have drawn on our extensive and well cultivated
relationships
with winemakers in these regions to offer you an experience that you won’t find
on any other tour.
Your hosts, french language and culture expert, Jennifer Pounds of Frog, the
Atlanta-Paris
Connection and Don Hackett, Senior Wine Educator and Certified Specialist of Wine,
have prepared a truly unique itinerary.  In addition to learning about the wines
of these regions, guests on this trip will also benefit from one on one time with
winemakers and immerse themselves in the culture and cuisine of Champagne and Burgundy.
With the experience gained over many years of travel in France, Jennifer and Don
have created an itinerary that strikes a perfect balance between organized activity
and free time.  Guests will have the oportunity to explore on their own, relax in
a quaint cafe, or shop until their heart’s content.  Of course, we’ll also be dining
on some of the best regional cuisine.  And if you are a Francophone, you’ll have
many opportunities to pratiquer la belle langue!   An unforgettable week awaits
you!

Itinerary

Arrive in Reims on Sunday evening.  We will gather for a casual dinner where you
will have an opportunity to meet your fellow enophiles.  Monday morning we head
to the French countryside where we will visit and taste with a small family-owned
Champagne producer and introduce you to the most important trend in Champagne, the
small grower-producer.  We will have a casual lunch and another visit & tasting
before heading to Epernay for the remainder of the day.

Tuesday will be all about one of the best known champagnes produced today, Veuve
Clicquot
.  After a brief visit to the Welcome Center, we head underground to tour
their vast caves, followed by a private guided tasting.  For lunch, we have the
rare opportunity to travel to the vineyards of Veuve Clicquot, dine at the Verzy
Mansion
, and see the actual wine press that Madame Clicquot used over 200 years
ago.  After returning to Reims, the rest of the day is yours to explore the city.

Wednesday, we travel to Beaune, with a stop in Dijon for lunch and sightseeing.
The rest of the day is yours to relax and get aquainted with the city of Beaune.

On Thursday, we tour the best vineyards of the Cote d’Or, the most revered landscape
in the world for lovers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.  Our morning begins in the
Cote de Nuits where we will tour, taste, and visit Chateau Clos de Vougeot before
lunch.  After lunch we explore the Cote de Beaune and visit the Hospice de Beaune,
before dining at the old cellars of Cottin Freres, the largest privately owned network
of cellars under Nuits St. George.

Friday, we stop by to see our friend, one of the only American winemakers in Burgundy,
Alex Gambal.  We tour, we taste, and enjoy a picnic lunch with Alex before heading
out for a truly unique experience: a hot air balloon tour of the vineyards of Burgundy.
Friday evening belongs to you to dine at your leisure.

Saturday morning, we must bid each other a beintot after breakfast and depart.

“Jennifer’s rich passionate mastery of the French culture and language is in perfect balance to Don’s  superior knowledge of all things wine.  The result is the trip of a lifetime for anyone who appreciates fine wine, European history or luscious cultural traditions that date back centuries yet are alive in the people you will actually meet.  The tastes of the traditional regional cuisine, the aromas of the finest wines in the world, and the memories of meeting the actual people who have dedicated their lives to the tradition of wine will be with me forever.”    Frank Paterno, 2010 Wine Tour of Bordeaux
